"Prison security categories for men
All male prisoners are given a security categorisation when they enter prison. These categories are based on the likelihood that they’ll try to escape, and the danger to the public if they did escape. The four categories are:

category A - prisoners whose escape would be highly dangerous to the public or national security
category B - prisoners who don’t require maximum security, but for whom escape needs to be made very difficult
category C - prisoners who can’t be trusted in open conditions but who are unlikely to try to escape
category D - prisoners who are trusted enough to wander freely but must show up for daily roll calls "

I was a correctional officer for the state of Texas for several years. I'm now a C/O in Delaware. I'm not familiar with those terms. Every state has different terminology for custody levels. Based on my experience I would say an open prison is one where minimum security inmates are held such as a work release center. Closed would be they do not leave the facility. As for the categories, I'm not familiar with A,B or C. Perhaps you could go to your states department of corrections website and get more information.

Society today is an open prison. Not euphemistically, but a fact. A closed prison is the conventional encarceration for convicted filons. The categories are offense gravity structures. So ... which one are you in?
