In 1943, the U.S. mint produced a *STEEL PENNY*, due to the lack of copper required by the war effort.

After the war, many of the pennies were made from melted down brass shellcasings.

I'm sure you could find a steel penny at your local coin shop for under a dollar and use it as a "show and tell" for school.

second world war took place during that time.. many people died and that is wierd enough to be mentioned as an answer to your question I guess :)
