Having an interest and good tools is a good start, but to keep up you have to have an excellent memory and the desire to continue to learn. Cars are changing very fast and most technical work on cars is electrical or computer related plus a good dose of reasoning. there are very few good mechanics, most are parts changers, until they guess right at the car owners expense. The work is hard, dirty and often the working conditions are tough. Most people believe any one can be a mechanic so they are usually not held in very high esteem. A lot of car owners do not want to pay what a good mechanic is worth and want the cheap fix. However, it can be very rewarding if you are good as well as patient with the public. If you want a trade that earns good money, be a certified welder, a plummer or electrician, especially an industrial electrician specializing in computer controlled systems.

Having the Know How and the Tool used to be enough but with the advances that the Auto repair tech is faced with daily it takes someone who is willing to relearn his craft every other year just to keep up with the changing technology of Autos today. The Days of If you have fuel and spark it will run are gone as are the days of buying the Basic Tools and getting a job as a mechanic it takes in some areas years to become good at you job.

i'm not a mechanic..but it's alot of physical work.
the worst part i think is that people these days don't value the work that mechanics have to do and put up with.
people don't really hold mechanics up in high regard due to the way society is these days. people are all interested in computers and internet technology..people, especially younger kids don't want to get their hands dirty.
many cars are all electronics and it makes it that much harder to work on them.
new german and japanese cars have alot of electronics that run the engines..you need an electrical degree to work on some of them!
i think it's a fulfilling job..just doesn't pay well.

go to ASE certification school if you want to become a mechanic. Non ASE mechanics really shouldnt be trusted. Its the best place to start. Places like Wyotech also are good.
and it is fairly hard work, but does pay well and business is pretty much always gonna be there. Cars are far too complex for the average person, so mechanics will always be needed.

it takes alot of paitence and you must be willing to learn all you can you almost need to know more than a doctor yes i know but think about it a disease dont change cars are changing every year it is alot to keep up with it is nice to be certified but a piece of paper with ASE on it does not make you a mechanic any one can get that and still not know anything which is true for alot of them you can trust the ones that are not certified more you know they had hands on training not sitting in a class room

I agree with firefighting, he hit the nail on the head. It's not a certification that makes one honest or dis-honest. I've worked as a transmission specialist for 21 years and it's been very good to me !!!! Work hard and never stop learning. That way you will rise to the top !! Good Luck.

then buy the tools and spend the time learning. its an ever changing industry and you have to be ready to adapt. thats how i made money, when i started there wasnt any computor controlled cars, we had carbs, then came the computors, then fuel injection, then ABS and so on. if you have the drive and the mechanical ability go to UTI, its worth it
