It is possible to increase your vertical jump by 5 inches. However, there are many variables involved. Age, ability, motivation, physical build, and access to proper equipment are but a few. Is it safe to assume that your goal involves athletics? Perhaps the fastest way to gain 5 inches in vertical jump is to use a piece of weight lifting equipment called..."duh", the LEAPER. Most high school and college gymnasiums use them for their basketball teams. You can also probably have access to this equipment by signing up for summer basketball camp. You can also use a weighted belt and jump up and down vigorously a thousand times a day. It sounds humdrum but it will work. You could jump 5X higher within a year if you put your mind to it. Good luck!

There is a very simple answer to this question. I don't know why more coaches don't use this tool for their teams. Bobby Knight wrote an article about how much he values this tool, not just to increase vertical jump but to increase endurance and quickness. The tool I'm talking about is the lowly jump rope. If you can jump rope for 12 minutes every day you will be amazed what it will do for you.

I am 6'6" tall and when in high school, I could dunk from directly under the basket and could slam dunk from three steps off the foul line. Elbows above the rim. I accomplished this by many repetitions of jumping exercises with light weights on my ankles. Also did many thigh strengthening exercises, like wall sits and half squats. Also jump and tap the ball off the backboard trying to get higher with each set of reps, even if only a fraction of an inch at a time. Keep at it. But you have to actually leap repetitively in order to attain good vertical ability. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO YOUR KNEES. IF THEY START TO BOTHER YOU, STOP THE EXERCISING AND REST THEM. Knee injuries are so common for this reason.

Weight training - do lots of leg presses, ham string curles and extensions, calf extensions. that will increase the muscle mass in the muscles you need to explosive power. OH, and squats (but do them safely, have a trainer show you the right form so you don't blow out your knees)
Then get a wooden box or borrow your mom's old step aerobics step. Do forward/backward and side to side jumps on and off and over the box. This is called plyometrics. it will work the muscles you need to jump. You can also do this up and down flights of stairs. (preferably NOT carpeted stairs, as you may lose your balance) Do lots of stair work hopping up one step at a time and two steps at a time. You can also bound the steps on leg at a time to work each leg individually. Of course, finding a wall, and putting a piece of tape at the height you want to reach, and doing jumps to touch the tape, will also help AND show you how much you have progressed.
It will take some time, but you can get there!

Play some pick up games on a lowered rim ,just low enough so you can dunk it most times. You will be having so much fun that before you know it you will be power dunking then raise the rim a little and repeat the process.
It is in our(guys) nauture to want to get great extention and really dunk it hard so you muscles will be getting trained to the proper mechanics needed to dunk.
Or you can try boring leg squats

All you need to do is to build up your calves, because when you jump you mainly use your calves muscles to elevate yourself.
There are many calf exercises that out there but the one that works for me is to run a minimum of three miles just using your calves (don't let you heel make contact with the ground while you run).
Another one is to jump rope using jumpsoles (a platform that is attached to your shoes that doesn't make your heel touch the ground.) Jump rope for at least 30 minutes everyday.
These exercises will improve your vertical leap and if you do them at least one exercise a day then you'll see improvement in about 2 weeks.

Sporting goods stores sometimes sell these- they are called Jump Soles, you strap them to your shoes while you are working out. They elevate the back of your foot, improving the strength of your calves. They are supposed to make you jump higher and also run faster, which should help you out with your vertical jump! Good Luck!
