Educate yourself by going to a bookstore and buying a recent copy of WRITER'S MARKET or FICTION WRITER'S MARKET. This book is absolutely the best source of information on preparing your manuscript for submission and has lists or publishers. Although expensive, this book contains such a wealth of information you will use it until it falls apart. Don't buy an old copy, though, because even one from last year could have outdated information. It also tells you if the publisher will accept unsolicited manuscripts or if you will need to submit through an agent. DO NOT use a vanity publisher ( one who requires you to pay for a printing in advance for usually 500 copies ) as the books are inferior in quality and appearance and they do not edit the material so therefor you will be paying to publish a book that probably is not ready to market. An editor at a reputable publishing house will help you polish your novel to perfection if it is actually accepted for publication.

I'm currently in the same position. I was told to write the book first, make sure I'm happy with it and won't get sick of going over it again and again, find an agent, and get them to deal with it. They get 10-15% of your money but they don't actually ask for anything from you personally, the publisher deals with splitting the cash.

STRONG ADVISE....Stay away from publishing companies that will ask you for money up front.
If you feel confident about the quality and writing of your book, go to a printer, Staples, for example.
Then on your own, either seek a distributor or get a page on the Internet.

write your book for starters. after that when youre ready to send it out into the world i recommend www.lulu.com for publishing. you will have to sell them yourself for the most part but you get more money for your work in the end and you wont be bullied by a publishing house.

write the first couple of chapters, write a synopsis of the rest of it. go to the library. look in the writers and artsists yearbook, find an appropiate agent, send the chapters and synopsis. (mail the chapters and synposis to yourself first, but dont open it - thats for copyrite reasons) and wait for a reply.
Good luck.

Print on demand publishers are great. You have to market it yourself, though.

You can self-publish. Write it and have someone bind it for you.
