I have an ' american accent ' I am Canadian. I am planning on comming over there and working. I am a UK citizen though - was born there and lived there for over 10 years. I've been back three times since I came to Canada as a boy. I know its changed but I really want to go back and I have bought a ticket for this sunday. Have things planned out good. Well I think this is enough information to give enough assistance for a good answer.

Uhm... the UK and the US are allies. Why is it a problem to be thought of as American... I am American, I lived there for years, and I never had a moments trouble.

Hmm. Are you ashamed of being thought of as an American, or are you just worried that it will hurt your chances of getting work or friends because of what THEY might think? I would say, be true to yourself, and don't do anything based on what you think people's opinion of you might be. Don't wear a maple leaf or a flag or anything to pre-emptively placate people. Don't bring it up either way unless someone else brings it up first. Probably it won't be that much of an issue, at least not as much as you fear it will be.

Once you are settled there, if you really do want to express your pride in your Canadian and/or UK heritage, go ahead and fly a flag of whatever country, or wear a maple leaf or whatever. Just make sure you are doing it out of sincerity and not to please others.

Wear your maple leaf if you think it is so shameful for people to think you are an American. Good luck with appearing Canadian.

Why would you want to be thought of as Canadian? Yeah, people abroad don't like Americans because they think we are a$$holes, but people make fun of Canadians for, well, just being Canadian......
