With that many miles it could be low compression. check the compression. Or other stuff like a weak fuel pump or partially restricted fuel filter, air cleaner etc. with little information is really hard to guess. maybe just tired.

When you say it does not start for 5-7 seconds, does the engine crank? If it cranks, but doesn't start right away, it could use a good tune up, and filters changed (fuel, air). If it doesn't crank right away,
there is an ignition switch on the steering column, it is held on by 2 screws, and often it becomes loose, and misadjusted. There is a metal rod that comes down from the key switch to the ignition switch (on the bottom side of the steering column closest to the brake pedal) it just has to be adjusted so when the key is turned,
it actuates the rod, and closes the switch.
If the engine turns over very slowly, the starter is likely getting weak, this happens more with the engine warm.

when you turn the key, does it make a noise? or does the car just crank for the 5-7 seconds before 'stumbling on' and running?

if so, that wouldnt be the starter, may have to check your ignition system, (spark plugs, wires, cap/rotor, but have the ignition system checked and tuned up, maybe check the timing as well. also, your fuel pump may be heading south, taking a few minutes to deliver fuel up front until it gets a nice flow going. Have the fuel pump checked and when was the last time you had the fuel FILTER replaced?

if the starter is the issue, the starter would do a few things like make a fast winding sound when the key is turned, or just jam up and not engage at all.... and for the heck of it, make sure your battery has full juice... hope this helps.

The fuel pump is bleeding off pressure. Some of these I believe had apart you could replace on the fuel pump assembly to fix it, but the short answer is it needs a fuel pump assembly to correct. This is a known problem with these. I can't figure out why it has never been fully corrected. In all actuality though, with the cost to repair, I'd probably just live with it. It just takes a little longer to start. It probably won't get any worse. Eventually it will fail, bu tit's not acting up because the pump is going bad. It's a check valve designed to hold pressure in the system. Hope his helps.

If your lights come on and your dash lights all your electrical parts then your battery is working and the post are on correctly and you are getting a good ground. Here is where I would start.Check your voltage in your battery you should have 11.9-12.1 volts if you been cranking the engine volts maybe down.Check the starter relay switch it may not be letting power to the starter when the key is in the start position. Then check the starter selonoid best is just to replace the starter

lol im glad the idiots above me went to tech school.....

check your fuel filter and fuel pressure. then check your tune up condition. but also check your basics, the air filter. its not abnormaly for an older engine to take longer to start. everything is worn out and there is less compression to help the motor start. next time, turn the key on and wait about 5 seconds then crank it. see what happens

253,000 miles is very impressive. The starter switch is broken. I don't know how to fix it, but it shoudn't be expensive. Go to a mechanic.

It could be the starter or the battery could be going out, most mechanics can test stuff and should not charge too much...I even think O'Reilly Auto tests your car for free, but I'm not positive on that

It's a little slow. It probably rode 'the half bus' to school. Give it time - it'll come around.

At least it starts dude give it credit for that at least. With that many miles it's lucky that it does.
