I usually have doubts about my knowledge on pc hardware so I just need to ask a couple of questions regarding replacing a harddrive. There is a status message that says 'smartfailure' at bootup so that probably means I have to replace the hard drive with a new one.
However I had a little experience before with Sony desktops that the Windows OS and drivers discs that come with the desktop are specifically designed for that particular hardware. Would I need to find that particular model of hard drive that is screwing up?

You should be able to use any brand as long as it is the same type ATA or SATA. ATA is also called PATA or IDE. Your Sony specific software should work fine with the new drive assuming you have the discs.

this isn't any longer that complicated. turn the pc off yet bypass away it plugged in. Open the chassis/case and touch a bare piece of steel (no longer the flexibility furnish unit) to discharge any static in you. Unplug each and all of the cables (frequently only one 4 pin ability and ribbon information cable). eliminate thecontinual from this is bay by skill of the two, undoing the keeping screws or freeing the clips that carry it in place. If the newcontinual is to be the grasp/majorcontinual on your setting up of abode windows, make constructive the jumper settings are maximum remarkable (there is frequently a diagram at thecontinual). to place in the newcontinual, follow those steps in opposite and ability up.

No, you can replace it with a different model of hard drive -- that's not where the OEM identification information is kept.
