Yes, many abnormalities can be detected through sophisticated ultrasound at about 11 to 14 weeks, but not at six weeks. During the last decade improvement in the resolution of ultrasound machines has made it possible to describe the normal anatomy of the fetus and diagnose or suspect the presence of a wide range of fetal defects in the first trimester of pregnancy.

I wouldn't worry about it though. Most likely everything will be fine. Take care of yourself.

The test you're trying to think of is amniocentesis. The doctor takes a small sample of the amniotic fluid, then they test some of the baby's sloughed off cells for the DNA strands that cause standard mental and physical deformities. Then you have the choice of aborting or not. You should be made aware that there is a chance that the procedure alone could bring on a miscarriage.

ask your doctor for a NEWBORN screening test. This test can detect possible defects or diseases as early as a two day old baby.
