Once you become sexually active (or about 18, whichever comes first) you really should see an ob-gyn once a year for a professional breast exam and pap smear. If you are in perfect health, not at all sexually active, no family history of "ob-gyn stuff" or cancers, and young (say, early 20's), you could probably get away with going every other year. But prevention is the best way to deal with what I call "women's diseases" and it's better to know any bad news sooner rather than later.

you don't really need to see a doctor on a regular basis.
some people go for colds, sore feet, etc. and it's silly...all they do is increase insurance costs for everyone else. When you're young you need certain shots for school. At some point you might have an earache. At some point you might want birth control pills, and because you would at that point be having sex you'd need pelvic exams yearly by your gynechologist. At some some point you might want to have a nurse check for HIV if you've had sex. And get a breast exam if you find any lumps. And if you don't feel good you'd need to have blood drawn to check that you're ok (or treatment if needed)....All those you'd do up to age 60. Other than that you don't need to visit a (physician)doctor. Of course if you have vision problems get that taken care of. It used to be that every 10 years you'd need a tetanus shot, and "maybe" flu shots, or a pneumonia shot when you get old.

You should see your OB-GYN every year for your pap and complete STD screening if you are sexually active.
See your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup.

If you are in good a health a general practitioner should be fine. You may want to see and obgyn yearly for sure unless he/she suggest other wise.
