Well, their value is usually much lower than advertised and they put more effort into how they look instead of how they work. : )

I think that is something in the mind of a young person.
My son purchased his own used car, and he chose it based on what he could afford, what shape it was in, leg room, and features. He got the best car he could afford, and he loves it. It's a 95 ford explorer. His friends are driving everything from a BMW to a Toyota Corolla. He is thankful he has a car of his own, and he chose what he likes and he takes care of it on his own..

From what I have seen, parents buy their kids BMWs or similar, don't have the pride of ownership (regardless of what the car looks like). This is definitely a great life lesson for him.

Plus, every teen crashes (either minor or major) their first year or two - so why spend a fortune on a brand new ego car?

The car allows a young person, for the first time, to go exactly where they plan on going. Trips to stores that would have left them sweating and nasty from the bike ride or walk over are now within a half hour's travel. A car allows them to personalize their life in ways they could not have done before, and allows them to obtain employment in places they could not have reached before.

well 1st off unless momy & dady bought the vehicle (a young persons car is what THEY can afford as there 1st car) not what they represent or as part of there identity !!! mums and dads $$$$$ is NOT THERES and would not count ! if you do buy an overpriced car you should REALLY be thinking of saving for a down payment for a house instead !

Your car is an extension of your identity because you make it your own. I mean, just look inside someone's car. It's pretty easy to tell what kind of person they are. Are they organized or a slob?

I know the saying as an "extension of men's private part"....
but your version means the same as when someone says: show me your car and I tell you who you are. So, if you have a beetle- then you must be a nature loving guy...if you have a BMW...then you must be rich (status symbol)....and maybe love life, because it's expensive and has lots of safety features....etc, etc, etc.

the vehicle usually a personal choice and therefore would somehow showcase a persons personality. and I know a lot of wealthy people that drive not so expensive vehicles...By the way I live in Palm Beach Florida so I see all kinds of vehicles down here.
