A film producer creates the conditions for making movies. The producer initiates, coordinates, supervises and controls matters such as raising funding, hiring key personnel, and arranging for distributors. The producer is involved throughout all phases of the filmmaking process from development to completion of a project.
A film director is a person who directs the making of a film. Generally, a film director controls a film's artistic and dramatic aspects, and visualizes the script while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of that vision.

The producer is in charge of the director. Most think the director is the top guy, but really the producer is. He's the one who takes care of all the finances, and makes sure the director stays on track. Without a producer, there would be no movie, (My dad and I had this discussion not too long ago.)

The producer pays for the movie (and therefore usually has the final say on pretty much everything.)
The director makes the movie.
It's usually a good idea to find a Director and a Producer that work well together.

The Producer makes the movie, comes up with all the cash, puts it on the market and basically does all the legal stuff and the paperwork, the producer is always busy.
The Director deals with the act tors, the writers, the costume people, and most of all he tells all these people how the movie is going to be, the director is the guy yelling CUT, CUT, now Jerome spit out your gum when your kissing Helen. and that kind of stuff. He's usually the guy wearing the french painters hat! The Director works for the Producer.

The producer is the one with the money and the contacts to produce, advertise, pay, and take the film to theaters. The director is the one that takes the idea from the script to the screen and it is his imagination what you see on a movie, or his point of view.

I think a producer supplies/coordinates the means to get the production off the ground and finished, and the director manages the production to make sure everything goes accordingly.
