Wow! Good Question! I thought I was the only one with interest in this. I did a lot of reading in my Comp 1 class about this last semester. Here are some of my thoughts on the matter...
I think Timothy was a little crazy. He seems to the naked eye like he had good intenetions, but did he really? He said he was out to protect the bears from harm, but the area he was in was protected by park rangers and him being there was kind of uneccessary. I think he may have had social anxiety disorder, caused from the fact that everything that he had tried in the natural settings we are usually in today didn't seem to go his way. His acting career never took off and society didn't seem to except him for much of anything else. Maybe he felt the need to get away from this and try to live " for the bears", like it was a seragent family to him. I also believe he may have been bi- polar, considering docs had diagnosed him with this, ut he refused to take his meds. I think all of these documentaries he took were a way to get his name heard possibly. I think he was very starved for attention, which he didn't seem to be getting. At least not the fame that he craved. He also claimed he was only out to protect the bears, but if you noticed with any wild life, it is best to stay clear of them to let them "be wild", but he didn't follow this rule, constantly disreguarding park rule. Some of these rules were to move your camp daily and such as this. He says he was prtecting them from poachers, when in reality, there were hardly any bears killed from poaching around that area. Less than 1% I think.
Given all of these facts, I honestly believe he committed suicide "by bear". I think it was his way of finally reaching the fame that he wanted, even though he wouldn't be around to see it. As for this girlfriend dying, I'm not sure. I personally don't believe that he wanted her to get hurt, but that it was her choice to stay and try to fight off the bear.
Don't get me wrong, some of the footage and material he shot was purely amazing, but I think he was out there for all the wrong reasons.
I would love to chat with you more on this fact if you want to. It's a favorite subject of mine and love to hear other people's points of view. If this is for a class, I would be more than happy to help. I got an A on mine, so I might be able to give you some pointers. I also asked a question about this and here is a link to it...

I've seen the movie and I definitely have to agree with you. He had mental problems of some kind. It's one thing to go a bit extreme to protect/advocate issues that are close to you, but he was seriously on the bad end of extreme, with some intense paranoia involved. It was honestly sad and a bit disturbing to watch.

He had is heart in the right place but his mind was kinda off track. Just strolling along out there with the bears. He could of helped them without needlessly risking his life.

I haven't researched him, but I did see the movie...he was a trip. I think alot of people who are really attached to animals are the ones who feel isolated from other people...

Not the best of deaths, but at least he was around the two he loved: bears and his fiancee.

He got what was coming to him. Wild animals are just that; WILD. What he did is like going into the ocean and trying to "play" with sharks. Eventually, something bad will happen!

Ultimately, he got what he wanted. Amazing, and sad story indeed.
