examples like Yahoo! and Google, when did the original creators start seeking trademark protection?(as soon as they registered the domain name, when they became successful?)

It's best to do so before a lot of time, effort & money is poured into a venture. There's no point in pursuing a name, investing in a name, advertising a name, etc. if it's already owned by another party, be it on the trademark or common-law levels.

As far as your specific examples, I did a quick check at the USPTO:

Yahoo filed for a trademark on January 24, 1996 (Serial # 75047949)
Google filed for a trademark on September 16, 1998 (Serial # 75554461)

These may not be the oldest trademark filings, depending if they filed in other countries first but this was the oldest I could find for the US, by just doing a cursory look. So, again, there could be an older US filing but I just wanted to be able to give you an example.

Hope that helps!

Normally the company will be trademarked as soon as possible to avoid any duplication of registered trade marks or any infrigements of the name etc. If your idea and your theme is good, you need to act rather than react.
