6 - x = 4
You want to get the x on the side by itself so you need to get rid of the 6. Since it is a positive 6 then you need to subtract 6. Remember that you need to do that to each side of the equation. That leaves -x = -2. You can't have a negative variable so you change the signs to the opposite. -x = -2 becomes x = 2

Normally I wouldn't show any work at all, but i'm assuming you're in pre-algebra and have to show all the minor steps, so here goes...

6-x=4................The original equation
6-x-4=4-4.........Subtract four from both sides
2-x=0...............Simplify
2-x+x=0+x.......Add x to each side
2=x..................Simplify for the answer.

Check (by substituting your answer for x):
6-x=4..............The original equation
6-2=4..............Substitute 2 for x
4=4.................The answer is correct.

Remember that "equation" means that both sides must always be equal; so you must always add, subtract, multiply, or divide by the same number (or letter) on both sides--not one side. The idea is to get rid of parts of the equation, by doing the opposite operation, until you end up with x= your answer.
