Would gladly pay good money for proof to show it is illegal for a judge to let a defendnat go after trial, on a guilty plea, for drug trafficing, no pending appeal, nor was there going to be one.

Did the judge impose bail (called an appeal bond)?

Perhaps the judge imposed a suspended sentence and a period of probation. If the convict violates probation, the full sentence takes effect.

The judge imposed such a sentence due to pressure from the defense attorney (He's a swell guy; he gives money to charity, et al).

Presentence release may have been part of the deal the prosecutor made to get the guilty plea in the first place. Even though the defendant pled guilty, he can be released on bond before the final sentencing hearing, so long as he shows up to complete his sentence.
