It's 2006, but commercials on American TV have barely scratched the "interracial couple" barrier — so it might be the 22nd century before we see a representation of a gay couple in a commercial.

But supposing for a moment that some progressive-thinking company put out a marketing campaign that includes two guys or two women, apparently gay, promoting, e.g. pizza: "Is it delivery or is it DiGiorno's?" Or, say, a Bose stereo — two guys sipping coffee at breakfast, just enjoying the music, for example.

I'm talking about the idea of gay couples in TV commercials, but with nothing sexual going on. No touchy feelies. No innuendo. Nothing even gay-oriented. Just same-sex couples who apparently live together and have comfortable relationships, promoting a product, the same way heterosexual couples have been doing on TV for about 60 years.

Your opinions? Approve / disapprove? Would you protest? Boycott the product? Be supportive? Be indifferent?

I think it would be a great idea. I think many people are scared of Gay couples because they don't know or understand that they are normal people.

I was down in NYC one year when they had a Gay/Lesbian Pride parade thing. Many (most) of the people were dressed like it was Halloween or a freak show (sorry) and all I could think was that I have gay friends, who are perfectly normal people. If this parade was someone's only view of the lifestyle then people certainly would not go out of their way to be support or even remain neutral about the it.

My son was 11 at the time, he was too scared too look up, he just stared at the ground. We did not do this on purpose, we were walking from lunch to the theatre, if I had any inkling that this was going on, we would have walked a different way.

I've seen a few print ads that looked ambiguous; also Orbitz ads that were meant for a gay male audience.

I like the ideas you have, but I'm in a same-sex couple. I'd probably go out of my way to support the product unless it's just complete crap, because a lot of people would go out of their way to boycott.

Girl, didn't you see that VW Golf commercial during Ellen's coming out episode? That was a gay couple in a commercial right there.

I have already seen commercials where the implication is that the people depicted in it are gay. Why would I disapprove? Gay people need to buy stuff, too!

I approve, but understand, companies will probably never do it. Why? Money. They don't want to risk losing consumers of their product just so they can appear tolerant.
