They seem to swarm all the time. I had a pretty bad reaction to a sting and need to see them gone.

no ! no ! no !
NO GAS you only make them mad and it evaporates.

buy some sevin dust, NOW I NEVER ADVISE SOMEONE TO NOT FOLLOW THE LABEL but this works, mix it with a small amount of powdered sugar (you want the poison to be taken in to the hive.) do this at night when the temp. is cool, place about 2 table spoons worth directly in the hole. go inside and have a beer, your problems will be over.

to prevent them from coming back keep the areas that they seem to be in watered well they do not like damp soil.

If you have already had a bad reaction to a sting, be very careful. Over the course of several stings, I developed a life-threatening allergic reaction, and I always carry an EpiPen injection with me now. Darned wasps! Anyway, after dark when the wasps have returned to the nest, you can blast the nest with flying insect spray. There are some kinds that shoot a long distance so you don't have to get too close, but watch out, because they often have other exits from the nest and will swarm out the other way. They won't be too happy, either! Since you have already had a bad reaction, I would suggest that you get someone else to do this for you, because each sting will increase your risk of getting a dangerous allergic reaction.
What I prefer, though, is to hang wasp traps. There are disposable ones, which I prefer, as well as reusable ones. In both cases, there is attractant in the trap, and you add water and hang up the traps. The wasps are drawn to the attractant, and they fly into the trap through small holes. Then they can't get out, and they drown. I have found that the traps have been the best method to keep the wasp population down. It's incredible how many wasps there are some years! You can find the traps at feeds stores, yard and garden centers, and Home Depot.
Whatever you choose to do, though, be really careful! Having a bad allergic reaction is a terrible experience.

First you must go and do it at night because wasps all "come home" when darkness falls. Secondly, go get some kind of Wasp/Hornet spray from Ace or Walmart. Thirdly, stand far enough away and then spray the nest well. CAUTION!! Stay far enough away because the bees will come out angry! Repeat the next night if there is still wasp activity the next morning.

let me expand on z-cats answer, know where the hole to the nest is,wait til dark, pour 1 gal gas and wait for a bit to soak in, drop a match and break out the party favors cause bee time is over! Caution this should be done by an adult!

In the cool of the morning you may be able to get out there and spray them. You said underground, if it is not near a structure try to burn them out with diesel fuel. You can also call the exterminator, or sometimes your local bee keeper will come and get rid of them for you. That is if you have some who makes honey in your area. Myself I wait until it is 40 to low 50 degrees and them spray them.
