It depends on the business. I was once the Director of Medical Records which put me one step above the file clerk and one step beneath the Office Manager. Since we also had a Clinic Administrator, I guess I was on the lower side of middle management. LOL

Depends - director can be both middle manager and the top. The US has a habit of calling people in the middle manager sector director. CEO is the most important - followed by managing director

In most companies a director would be a senior manager, with multiple departments under their direction.

It depends, I am a Director of Child Development and I am middle managemnet during the week, but upper management during the weekends.
