Like any field tied to technology, the skills will change. But gas cars will be with us for decades, regardless. People are slow to change, so even if electric vehicles become perfect, many will still drive the old-fashioned cars.

In fact, what we will likely see are 'serial hybrids.' These are not the same as the hybrids we have now. A serial hybrid is an electric car, but with a very small gas engine to charge the batteries. The gas engine could be removed, to save space when you don't need it. But you would plug it in for long trips. This kind of hybrid makes much more sense than the kind we have now.

Auto mechanics don't soley fix the engine. Anything from windshield wipers to on-board computers get serviced by them. In fact, a person I know was given a free car, because it wouldn't start, the mechanics couldn't figure it out because it has primitive computers which they couldn't diagnose. Turns out the gas tank was empty.

But the point is, the electric motors and batteries still need to be serviced.

The auto industry will always make cars that it takes a technician to work on. It is going to be a lot of years before all the gas driven cars are gone. I would like to see a nuclear car.
