Lycanthropy, or the beast-who-is-man (not wolfism, but lycanthropy) is a universal myth found in all human cultures; the werewolf myth specifically is intrinsic, of course, to regions of the world where the wolf was or is found.
The first written werewolf tale in Western literature is in Petronius' *Satyricon* (approx 65 CE). I recommend starting there.
The 19th century fascination with werewolves in the English-speaking world begins with *Wagner the Wehr-Wolf*.
The American preoccupation with it really dates from the advent of film. Lon Chaney Jr.'s performance in *The Wolf Man* really shaped the popular understanding of werewolves for some time. The werewolf became a tragic figure, the person cursed to have no control over his own aggressive nature.
I would strongly recommend you read Montague Summers' classic *The Werewolf in Lore and Legend.*
The Shaman of Trois Freres is a cave painting in France that shows either a wolf in a man-skin or a man in a wolf-skin, and is some 30,000 years old. So this is a pretty old myth.

In Norse mythology, the legends of Ulfhednar (an Old Norse term for a warrior with attributes parallel to those of a berserker, but with a lupine aspect rather than ursine; both terms refer to a special type of warrior capable of performing feats far beyond the abilities of normal people. Historically, this was attributed to possession by the spirit of an animal) mentioned in Haraldskvaeoi and the Volsunga saga may be a source of the werewolf myths. These were vicious fighters analogous to the better known berserker, dressed in wolf hides and said to channel the spirits of these animals, enhancing their own power and ferocity in battle; they were immune to pain and killed viciously in battle, like a wild animal. They are both closely associated with Odin.
Then you have the hollywood version of a werewolf also..bleh

“Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.”

"For more than a century, ideological extremists at either end of the political spectrum have seized upon well-publicized incidents to attack the Rockefeller family for the inordinate influence they claim we wield over American political and economic institutions. Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as 'internationalists' and of conspiring with other around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure - one world, if you will. If that is the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it." David Rockefellers memoirs (2002)

Well there are alot of myths on how to become a werewolf. One way is to be born a werewolf. another is to wear a wolfskin belt, called wolfsbane, or a cursed ring on a night with a full moon. To (of course) be bitten by a werewolf. Drinking water from a wolf print. Drinking from a stream were wolves have drunk from recently. To commit a sacrilege. Hereditary. Being born on a new moon. Being born on Friday the 13th. Being born on Christmas day. Drinking from a cursed stream. Affixing a lycanthropus flower to your clothes. those are all of the ways to become a werewolf.
