Well the most they can do is win the wildcard, and unless they start winning soon, it doesn't look too hopeful. I don't think there is enough time to win the division, seeing as they're 6.5 games back. I wish they hadn't ruined it though, they were on top all year. :( I guess it's because they've had injuries, and also because they're the Red Sox and it's August! But they wouldn't be the Red Sox if there wasn't any drama...so maybe something will happen just when everyone's given up on them.

Ah, I see Georgie Porgie on here flapping away...the same person who declared "Come Monday Boston will be in 1st Place. Period. End of Story."
Well, if not for Seattle's game winner, Boston would be 7.5 games behind since they lost to Anaheim. If they do come back, it is going to be a hard road. The Red Sox are not as balanced as they were during the Grady Little-built World Series team. Their bullpen is depleted, starting pitching is suspect, Papelbon is human and they don't have replacements to mix and match the rotation. The return of Wakefield might be a little too late and too many people are stating that Varitek/Nixon are the reason for the losses and when they return, they'll win the division. I don't think so. Even with Wake/Nix/Tek, like I said, it may be too late by that time to salvage the season because they had nothing to plug those holes...unless you consider Javy Lopez a viable fill.
The archrival Yankees replaced Sheffield/Matsui/Cano and a slew of injuries with viable options before the Abreu/Lidle/Wilson deals. It was a great idea to keep Bernie, bring Melky, utilize Andy Phillips, keep Proctor, etc...
If they do come back, and let's face facts that it's been done (1978 Yankees among others), but it is getting late in the season and 6.5 (which is really 7 games) is an uphill battle and NY is not a .500 or sub-500 team. It'll take a collapse of NY to do it. It's possible, but unlikely.
As for WildCard chances...ah, New York was the last to wrestle 1st Place from the White Sox when they were only WC contenders. Boston hasn't even gained ground there...
Here's a little math for the people who would shout - 10 game win streak!
If NY goes 7-3 and Boston 10-0. Boston is still 3.5 (4) games behind. NY goes 5-5, Boston 10-0...right back to 1.5(2) games behind. Better position, yes...but realistically, it's going to extremely hard to recapture the divison.
Tom Verducci said it best:
Playing uphill. Six-and-a-half games back with 38 games to play (New York has 39) is a brutally tough mathematical problem. Say the Yankees go 20-19 (hard to believe it won't be better; they have 20 games left against the Mariners, Royals, Orioles and Devil Rays). Boston would need to play .684 baseball (26-12) just to force a one-game playoff with New York.

The Red Sox can't compete with the Yankees this year (but then again, who can). Yanks gave them a thorough asc kicking and won't look back. But they do have an outside chance of getting the wild card. They are as good as the Tigers, WSox, and Twins, who will be beating eachother up over the last 5 weeks. I hope they make it for a post season asc kicking from the Yanks!
YANKEES ALL THE WAY!!! 11-0 playoff run for #27, baby!!!!!

The Red Sox will not comeback because their pitching staff is getting worse by the day and the injuries are adding up. They will need to add at least 3 good pitchers for next year if they hope to make the playoffs in 2007!!!!!!

Well, you can't say its impossible, but I think it is very unlikely. The Red Sox haven't played well since the All-Star break, and their pitching is not where it was a couple of years ago. It actually looks like they will fall back even furthur in the race over the rest of the season. They know their only chance to make the playoffs (White Sox and Twins are battling for the wildcard) is to win the division. Maybe next year for the Red Sox?

Not until or unless they can get their catcher back off the DL. Jason not only is great at bat, but calls a terrific game. The reason, IMO, that the Sox got creamed against the Skankees is that their pitching failed. And that is because of the absence of Veritek.
