i need help with this math problem...thnx

A pilot flew a jet from Montreal to Los Angeles, a distance of 2500 mi. On the return trip the average speed was 20% faster than the outbound speed. The round-trip took 9 h 10 min. What was the speed from Montreal to Los Angeles?

So going there his time was T and coming back it was T / 1.2 (because 20% faster), so T + T/1.2 = 9h 10 min.

2.2 x T = 1.2 x (9 h 10 min)
T = 1.2 / 2.2 x (9 h 10 min) = 300 minutes = 5 hours
So 2500 miles in 5 hours = 500 miles/hour

of course the jet flew at 250 mph on the way there! and 300 mph on the way back! 300 mph is 20% faster than 250 mph.
if you fly 250 mph for 5 hrs. you get 1250 miles away. Also if you fly at a rate of 300 mph for the remainder of the 4hrs 10 mins you fly a total of 1250 miles. lol the extra speed makes up for the loss of time. Hope this helps you. unless you already got the answer. lol by the way the exact answer is 250 mph. some of the answers these people give are ridiculous. a jet does not fly 500 mph. thats kinda funny.

total speed = total distance / time = (2500 + 2500)/ (9 h 10 min [convert to min or hour])

total speed = (average speed from montreal to los + avrage speed from los to mon.)/2

average speed from los to mon = 1..2 * average speed from mon to los

by these formulas find the speed.

9 hr 10 min = 540 min

x + y = 540 min
x = 1.2y

2.2y = 540 min
y =approx --> 245.5

540.5 - 245.5 = 294.5 min

nevermind my math is horrible.... but its the right idea

2500mi/294.5min=8.5mi/min
=approx 510 mph

rt = 5000 miles

(r+1.2r)(550 Minutes) = 5000 miles

2.2r = 5000 miles / (550 minutes)

r = 5000 miles / (550 minutes * 2.2)

r = 4.1323 miles / minutes X 60 minutes

r = 247.93 miles per hour

Well its quite simple all you do is divide 9.10 by .20 and you should get the speed. At least that is what i think.

How about you either solve it yourself or not at all. Giving you the answer won't help you one bit.
