1).Highlight things the teacher specifically mentions.
2). Highlight types of things that have shown up on previous tests
3). Highlight things that you have trouble remembering (dates, names, places).
4). Don't buy text books that are all ready high lighted...the previous owner may be far less intelligent than you and highligted unnecessary things, or much more intelligent and highlighted very few things.

Keywords, and phrases. Like ones you know the teacher talked about (or will). Also new words, like the vocab words (depending on what class). It helps to highlight subchapters/sections within chapters/paragraphs, so you can quickly glance down and find the place you will find the answer, or the place you need to look for what you are studying/discussing. If you are a note-taker and you read and highlight chapters at home, highlight key words and main topics of the lecture. If you hightlight your text during the lecture, do the same, highlight the main words/issues the teacher speaks about. Figure which works best for you. Some methods work better for some classes than others, and you should adjust what you are doing to make it easier for yourself. That is what I used to do!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

I always read a section/paragraph and then go back and highlight the main concept of that part. Just don't highlight as you read b/c you'll end up highlighting everything.

Same here. I don't even know what I'm "supposed" to be highlighting. I just give the reading material a good once-through (reading everything), do my homework, and listen to the teachers.

I don't recommend highlighting at all. maybe jot down a few words on the paper as if ur taking notes? because if you highlight it you tend to focus more on the highlighted parts as u reread the text.

I use removeable post-it flags next to important figures or charts that would not reproduce well. I copy important notes into my notebook.
If I keep my texts clean, they can be resold or donated to Friends of the Library and they are nice for the next person.

I do not highlight anything because I remember them better if I write them on a separate piece of paper. Your own words are easier to remember then anything else.

If there is a lot of text devoted to a person or idea, I underline that and dig for the important key facts related to it. Later, when you go through the chapter again, this will grab your attention and help you re-learn it.
