If you read closely you can probably tell. A teen uses IM spelling, very little punctuation and lots of run on sentences. They use few or no capital letters, and say "like" ever 3 or so words. You can also tell by the type of questions they ask.....if it's about a boyfriend / girlfriend / best friend issue it's probably a teen. You could also click on their avatar picture and see if they have a profile set up (which may or not be true).

You really can't be sure. Predators know how to imitate the targets of their predation. So, someone who is looking for teens or children learns to use their slang and not to be careful about their spelling. Thus they make their targets believe that they are younger than they really are. One person suggested getting the person on a web cam. That is probably the most reliable way to confirm whether the person on the other end is an adult or not. However, I am sure that there are still ways to fake it even with a cam. So, be very suspicious if the person on the other end wants you to keep secrets from your parents or guardians and/or want to meet you without them present.

Usually adults use better grammar and less slang. Also, take a look at who and what the poster thinks is cool, and whether they talk about "work" or "school." But ultimately you're just going to have to be careful and trust your judgement.

I am 54! I go back to their page and see what type of questions they have asked and how they answered a few. That way I have a glimmer of what type of person and their age before I answer or tell them to contact me. I also ck them out if they contact me before I read their email or reply to them. I just think it is safer not to get mixed up with some of these folks!Best wishes and keep safe!

That's the dangers of the Internet, you never know. You should always be careful and not disclose ANY personal information because the person you're talking to could be lying about who THEY are.

Mostly, you can't tell. Sometimes you can guess by what they type, such as slang, or abbreviations, or capitalization, but sometimes adults are lax in their grammar, and some teens have excellent grammar.

Teens have terrible grammar, as a rule, and use abbreviations, like "lol". Also, sex is a favorite subject. Ah, to be so easily amused.
