USC / UCLA. The rivalry has a different character than any other rivalry I know.
Most rivalries have some geographic border. Not a lot of Yankee fans in Boston, and even fewer Sox fans in New York. Same goes for most college rivalries. Alabama is split into "Tide" and "Tigers".
Except this one. Both schools are similar in size, and play each other in a every college sport every year (unlike Chicago Cubs/White Sox, who hardly play against each other at all, or Boston College/Boston U/Harvard, which are in different leagues).
The schools are only separated by a few miles, which means that every community, every workplace, every gathering will be split by the rivalry. Even in LA, where the fans are much less, well, fanatic about their sports then in other parts of the country, the USC/UCLA football game brings out huge action year after year.

Alright, this question is loaded, there are way too many good rivalries out there. It al depends on where you live to see which is the best LA/SF, or USC/UCLA, if you live in So Cal. Or STL/CHI for the midwest or NYY/NYM for the east coast there are too many good rivalries to just pick one. For my moneys worth i would have to go with Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant. LOL Old School.

The biggest rivalry in the world is called the Old Firm....Glasgow Celtic versus Glasgow Rangers in Scotland. The hatred is more than skin deep, it involves over 100 years of ethnic identity, religion, politics, and nationality.
