I live in Central Florida, about 45 miles west of Cape Canaveral.
I can stand in my front yard and see the shuttle go up. It is very obvious and easy to see.
Of course you can go to the Cape and you can watch without having to buy a ticket. The ticket is only to get into the tour area. You can stand out in the parking lot and have just as good a view.
You can also stay in Daytona Beach (north of the Cape), Titusville (west of the Cape), or Cocoa Beach (south of the Cape) and have a good view too.

Well, not too close. A lot of cub reporters used to be grateful when their senior colleagues invited them to cover a launch from Cape Canaveral close up. The reason was that if the rocket had exploded, there wouldn't have been much left within a radius of 2 km.

Depends on how close you want to get. The last time I was in Cape Canaveral, we went to one of the restaurants off the A1A right on the water and just had a leisurely dinner during the launch window. We got quite a show, just before dessert :)
