the general rule that i was taught was if cracks are less than 1/4 inch apart then replace it. But according to Haynes for my vehicle cracks do not indicate a bad belt only when the ribs actually come off it needs replacing.

5 cracks per inch or more...This is one of the easiest ways for a mechanic to make a quick 75 - 100 $$ in 1/2 hour. until the belt begins to fray on the edges or lose ribs you are most likely ok for 5+ years per change.

If there are a lot of cracks in it change it. It is a lot better than being broke down along the highway. The towing charge alone will be more than the belt.
