Start with this question for yourself--

What features do you want?

Do you plan to use the MP3 player to workout or jog?

If so, you probably want to look at a FLASH memory player (right now, anything under 20GB in storage size is pretty much a flash memory player). These ar eless fragile, and have fewer moving parts. Ipod Nano & Creative Zen V or V plus, or the Sandisk e200 series are some examples from this category.

Do you want an FM radio?

If so, then know that the ipod doesn't have that feature unless you buy another $50 add on. Most other players do have an FM tuner.

Do you have more than 10GB worth of music?

Then you want a HARD DRIVE based player, instead of a flash based player... the full sized ipods, the creative Zen Vision M, the Toshiba Gigabeat, etc.

Do you have a lot of music in WMA format? Do you plan to use subscription services like yahoo! music, or rhapsody, or Napster to go?

If so, ipod is out. You need to look at other players that support that technology.

Do you want to have a LOT of accessories to choose from?

Then ipod is the choice for you. 100s of cases, speakers, add-ons, etc. more than any other brand of player.

Do you want to watch video on your mp3 player?

You can pick from the newest ipods, the zen vision M, the newest gigabeat, etc. Each different player supports different file types. Most will require you to convert the files. If you don't care about video, you can probably find an older or used player to satisfy you.

If money wasn't an issue I would certainly choose the Ipod. Here's why:

All sorts of neat gadhets that the ipod has. For instance you can attach all of the following: an fm radio, voice recorder, remote control, exteranal battery pack, special boomboxes, special speakers and lots lots more.

Sound quality is awesome.
Most other MP3 players, you need to send the sound information to speakers via the headphone jack. That method of sending the information is not the beast for quality. You know that data connection on the ipod? It is a more effective method of sending the audio information and so the sound sounds better. Thats why you see so many speakers that are made specifically for the ipod data connector

If money was an issue, as it is for me, I would choose the San disk e250, especialy since it is only 189 dollars. It has built in 2gb memory, but you can expand the memory! What other Mp3 player does this?

In addition, it does the video feature which you don't get with the ipod unless you spend 300 dollars.

It also has a built in voice recorder and FM radio.

Its also a popular enough brand you get some acceories with it.

Good luck on your search,

Well I don't know what best to buy, but I've got an iPod mini, not a Nano, just one of those normalish sized ones.

The battery on iPods is not too great, mine anyway, the battery drains quite quickly and I hardly ever use mine. I think they're quite expensive for what they are aswell, but I won mine so I'm not complaining! I've seen other peoples iPods and they get scratched quite alot because they're coloured and shiny. The earphones you get with them don't last long either, don't get me wrong, they sound great while they work. They've got good built in bass and they're really good quality, the experts say not to turn up the volume too much because they're more powerful than normal headphones and cause damage to the ears. My left earphone went fuzzy, then while on the plane coming back from holiday the right one stopped working altogether (was this because of the pressure on the plane, I have no idea). Then all of a sudden, I turned my iPod on yesterday and both earphones work fine!

Hope this helps!

my honest advice get a sony ericsson phone, it has a 2mp camera/ video camera (which can be hooked up to a PC) as well as your mp3 player. My sony is a w700i which can do 2gb of music memory which is a fair bit, but the 2gb mem card costs around £50 and the phone is £150, so £200 in total about the same as a normal mp3 player. The latest sony's can take a 4gb card.

Or get a creative which have around 20gb's, but hardly anyone needs this much memory. I would advise u not to get an ipod as they become redundant in 4 years when the battery dies and u can't replace it.

as the owner of a 60gb ipod, i would highly recommend them. I sat on the fence for months before taking the plunge, the overriding factor is the shear amount of 3rd party accessories, i now have mine plugged into my Alpine 9850ri int the car with full ipod control from the steering wheel, or how about the wealth of docking stations from logitech on the cheap side to Bose if your flush. None of the other players can compete with this. Microsoft are releasing a unit later this year, but it will probably take 3-4 yrs until they can compete properly, providing it is successful in the market place.

I would get the creative zen vision m. they are better than the ipod video if u want to watch videos, because it has about 4 times more colours on the screen than the ipod (262,144 to 65000). however it is more expensive. the ipod is thinner, and has more accessories and features, like games and text reader. but it doesnt have fm radio or microphone, which the zen vision m has. the cheapest place apart from ebay to get them is amazon.

iPod. I know there overrated but there really good. I believe the price jsut dropped down again so thats a pro. they hold a lot of songs. and if you'e ever tired of sons you can just watch movies or look at photos. its a good buy , really. but if you're going backpackign I suggest you buy a skin/case to cover it because it gets scratched very easily.

I suggest the Apple brand of music players. I heard of hard drive crash and other stuff, but mine has been perfectly fine, except scratches.
