The simplest way for you would be to tell with respect to a car. If the person is in US then when he is sitting in the car the steering wheel is always on the Left and the front passenger seat is on the Right.

You are a driving instructor? No wonder it takes alot for you to laugh. Can't laugh when you have no voice from screaming, "Left is the side that doesn't kill us both!!" ;)

Stop the car, take your pupil onto an island with a traffic bollard, turn to face the oncoming traffic.
Traffic moving away from you is on the left
Tfaffic coming towards you is on your right
Just tried to turn it into a motoring example,
Hope it helps

I taught my children by getting them to put out both hands in front of them with the thumbs sticking out sideways.
The left hand looks like the capital letter L.
The right hand does not.

If something or someone is facing north, the left side is toward the west.
In politics, the left is a philosophy or group that supports more liberal social policies than other political groups.
"What's left" means that which remains.
"Left out" means not included.
"Left" is the past tense of "leave."

Most people define it as Bad side. Where as right side is defined as Good side if they are asked to define it . In fact they use the terms bad side and good side in routine daily conversations.
I am a doctor and when I see patients and ask the question, say "which side your tummy hurts?", many patients answer it is here, my bad side.
