Morticians don't work in morgues. If you want to do forensic sort of stuff, you can try to get a job as a transporter with your county morgue. They are always looking to hire people because the job is hard to fill. In some states, you can be trained that way and work your way up to investigator without having to go to school. If they don't have any paying positions for starting out, volunteer; eventually they will start paying you once they know you can handle the job. (that's the way it works where I'm from.)
