Her last poop was at 6am this morning, it is now 5:23 and about 30 minutes ago she pooped a little bit, it looked harder than her regular poops. I think it may be cause I just switched her from breastmilk to formula. She is 10 days old. Is it okay to give her juice? If so, should i dilute it with water? I heard juice is okay for babies, but shes really young, and im not sure what age they mean when they say "babies".

Please do not give your baby juice not even when it's diluted. It is highly not recommended for babies to drink or eat anything else that breast milk or formula until they are 6 months old.

If your baby doesn't cry or doesn't show any discomfort, it might not be constipation at all...It is normal that babies do not poop everyday. They poop almost every time between feedings in the beginning but then it will gradually go down to once a day - breastfed baby could even go up to 3 days and it's okay.

Please do talk to your pediatrician instead of staying on yahoo though, I really do not agree that some people say it's okay about juice and all... best is to ask an expert and not be sorry...

Gripe water helps with colic but I'm not sure it helps with constipation.

Don't give her juice! I called the dr. about this same problem when my baby was only a month or so old. (I don't think your baby is constipated yet if she pooped this morning, though.) Here are the suggestions the dr. gave me:

1. Take baby's temp rectally. This stimulates the rectum and usually produces a poop.
2. Give the baby some water - only 2-3 times per day.
3. Add a little DARK Kayro syrup to the bottle - 1 tsp. per 2 ounces of formula.
4. (And this is a last resort if baby doesn't poop at all for several days) Give Baby a glycerin suppository.

Again, your baby probably isn't really constipated. If she goes 3-4 days, without a poop, then she's constipated.

Good luck!

if she pooped this morning, then they will not consider that to be constipated. They say that if she has not gone in three days then you have to worry about it. I would think you could give her a bit of juice, but only about 1/2 ounce and that is half water and half juice to equal 1/2 ounce. I would cut down the amount of the powder that you mix with the water, or just add a little more water to her formula for a couple of days to help her adjust to the change... But call your DR to make sure on what to do

It's actually OK for a baby to go days with out pooping. Unless the poop comes out like rabbit pellets she is not constipated. Bealive me I went to my pediatrician for my baby when I thought the SAME thing. She looked at me like I was retarded and then told me if she seems uncomfortable I could give her baby pear juice diluted with water like half ounce of pear juice to once ounce of water. She was 7 days old at the time. But if you are really concerned I would take her to a peds doc. good luck and congradulations on the new baby

i would just give her straight water no juice i think shes too young for that-also did you ween her into formula w/ only being 10 days seems too soon to be switched all together-she will have a change in her bowel movements every time something new is introduced-but i wouldnt say she is constipated-constipated would be like 2 days w/ no bm-call your dr and ask them if you r so worried-they could probably tell u over the phone what to do-i just dont think you have anything to woory about-dont give juice-too young

You know I dont really think your baby is constipated. You said that you swiched from breast milk to formula. When babies are fed using breast milk the poop comes out easily almost runny kind of, when when they are on formula it hardens up a bit and the baby isnt used to it. I dont think that there is a problem, but if your are concerned about it I would not hesitate to call the doctor and see what he thinks.

I would not suggest juice... you probably need to switch him to a low iron formula, and I have used a tiny bit of karo in their bottle before when they were that small.. that will make them go... you could also try and put a bit of petroleum jelly on the tip of your pinky and stick it in his bottom real easy and it is sprt of like an enema.. or you can use enemas

My sister in law was changing her baby over from one formula to another and my niece got constipated. The doc told her to take a Q-tip and dip it in vaseline. Barley insert into her butt. I dont know why but this worked on her each time she was constipated.

She shouldnt stay constipated long. Her body just needs time to adjust to the formula.

Contact a doctor or nurse advice line at your hospital. I would not give a newborn juice even diluted.
