Almost all light engines use magnetos for ignition. A permanent magnet mounted on the drive shaft spins past a coil, inducing a current in it. At the right time, points open, interrupting the flow of current; the inductance of the coil, in resonance with the capacitor across the points, creates a high voltage which fires the spark plug.
