Some reading material is based over a span of time. While you're reading you need to realize that the story has jumped to a different time and sometimes even back to a previous time. In understanding this change in time you will comprehend what the story or reading material is about otherwise you will get lost and unable to make sense out of it.

Fortunately, you have asked this during the time I am preparing to take the Law School Admissions Test. Apparently, because studying a time line involves understanding a flow and organization of events, it is directly related to reading comp. Usually, this process of understanding is HOW we read and retain information. (Thank you Princeton Review!) Hope this helps.
