I've been to the Winchester House. It is in San Jose, not Santa Barbara. I thought it was pretty neat. It didn't feel real creepy, but I don't know how a single woman lived there and found her way around.
I think the story goes something like she thought she was cursed because her husband invented the Winchester rifle and killed hundreds of Indians. She had to keep building to confuse their ghosts as you said.
They used to and probably still do, have candlelit tours during the week of Halloween. I think that would be creepy. She used to have seances. Don't know if her fears were real or not, but she obviously believed they were.
It's been quite a few years ago that I went, but I would highly recommend seeing it. It's quite different.

The house is in the SAN JOSE area. The house is real, really tacky and pretty ugly too. BUT if you go on a tour of the house they explain to you better why she did the things she did.
It might not be true... cuz if you think about it... a ghost visits a place where they were tramatized or left unfinished business... in the mansion the deal is that since soo many rifles killed innocent people those ghost or lingering.. i think the poor old lady just went crazy and was a religious fanatic.

No, but I have always wanted to see it. It is the Sarah Winchester mansion, she is the granddaughter of the creator of the Winchester rifle. I was told that she had a contraption that continued to automatically hammer nails during the night, while Sarah slept-she was THAT superstitious. And that the day the hammer stopped, she DIED!!

I haven't been there, but it is a true story. The womans name was Sarah Wincester. She would also set the plates for 13 guests, even though she ususally ate alone.
