The character you are thinking of is Juan Epstein, from "Welcome Back, Kotter" starring Gabe Kaplan, and John Travolta. Epstein was played by actor Robert Hegyes (who was also later featured on "Cagney and Lacey")
He was a "sweathog" the other three originals were Freddy "Boom-Boom" Washington, Arnold Horschack, and Vinnie Barbarino ('up your nose, with a rubber hose.')
The film version of the series is currently in production with Ice-Cube set to play 'Kotter.'
