Typically you have to be at least 3-4 cm, but doctors vary. I think you should wait until you can't tolerate labor without it. I arrived at the hospital ER at 8 cm (after only 45 minutes of labor) and received one at that time. Looking back, I wish someone would have helped me stay focused and advised me not to get it. What should have taken possibly only another 30 minutes or so, took 1.5 more hours!!

like every one eles is saying your really should ask your doctor. or maybe you should try a child prep class. i went to one and it helped me understand so much. you may not use half the stuff in it but at less your informed and ready for what ever happens in the deliever room. sound's like you have lots of questions. that will help you out a lot. but as far as your question my hospital said any time from 4 to 7cm.. but that will also depend on how fast you dialating and so on, so it really depends on you labor.

I seem to recall that they made me wait until I was four centimeters dilated before they'd give me the epidural. It took an agonizing six hours.

It may vary from hospital to hospital or from person to person... I don't know. Get the epidural as soon as they'll let you! Epidurals are wonderful...

Contact your local hospital labor and delivery and speak to a nurse.

You sure do have a lot of questions about pregnancy and should have asked your doctor all of them. That is what they are there for.

Wait as long as possible, or it will wear off to early. Around 5 or more centimeters.
