I am a paralegal, and I would have to say that you need to be accountable, work with extreme accuracy, put up with lots of big egos, enjoy the work for the rewards that the job gives you but don't look for rewards from the big egos. Many of them like to take all the glory even though their staff did 85% of the work that leads them to their end result. After five years, it pays well and you certainly could support yourself.
Paralegals are not wannabe attorneys. They have to be the kind of people that like working behind the scenes, assisting in research, working to get documents from the opposing party, extremely organized, can task well, put pieces of the puzzle together, good communicator, keeping your attorneys apprised of the cases. You need to manage a very large amount of cases in many firms, from 80 to 150 cases. That means calendaring tasks for cases so you are reminded to attend to something in each case to prevent it from moving forward or languishing without attention. It's fun work if you like to work autonomously, and take pride in a professional position. Good luck in your decision.

A paralegal is someone who assist a lawyer. They do research, prepare the sometimes enormous amount of paperwork involved in a case, or track evidence and catalog all the pieces of information relevant to a case.
An advanced paralegal can be a position of high responsibility and expertise - they are often more experienced than the lawyers for which they are preparing cases, but never went to law school or passed the bar examination. Since it is a challenging job, demanding lots of detail, reading and researching, it is a tough job, but also a rewarding one: experienced paralegals can make a bunch of money, sometimes over $50 an hour.
