Just like much of history, only the best and the worst is recorded in the history books. Take what you read about the best and the worst and figure out what's in the middle. Then you'll probably have reality.

If you are interested in this subject, than try and find a collect put out by Time Life on Old West. Never read it, but talk with some that did, and was amazed how much was movie hype. Can't remember anything specific so guessing the draw downs seen in almost every western show rarely happened can't remember if this is one of the things that never happened, but it may like many other things get listed as movie hype.

Reality: Confederates did manage to make a stronghold in California. Largely they were based in the San Bernadino area.

Reality: Monterey was the first capitol of California; it was moved to San José a few years later. Then as the CW drew closer, the capitol was moved to Sacramento, a middle point between the Sierra Nevada over passes, and the Pacific Ocean.

Look on the Internet and/or read some books, my dear. There was a lot of lawlessness; men running around unchecked killing one another. Many wars between Anglos and Native Americans. Lots of hard work, of course, and none of the technological advantages we have today. Hard times setting up cities and getting goods from one place to another. Get caught for cattle rustling or stealing a horse and you'd be hung. Women were considered either "good" or "bad." Do some research, because its very interesting!

The truth? People worked very hard, died young of preventable diseases, had lots of children who died even younger. If disease didn't get you, the weather could: snowstorms, tornadoes, floods.
It was short, hard, brutal, and dangerous.
Myths? Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie.
