I whole-heartedly agree with you that uniformity in language is an integral part to the unity of this nation, and to our continued progress. It is in fact no coincidence, that when immigrants came to this country, assimilated its customs and language, this country arose to be the greatest superpower on earth, and now that many immigrants no longer see the need to learn the language, and instead retreat to their ethnic enclaves, this country is on a decline both economically and socially.
There is a direct correlation between the power of a nation and the degree to which there is uniformity in language. Notice that ever superpower, dating back to ancient Egypt, though encompassing various ethnicities with their own unique dialect or completely different language, had a language that was universal across the nation. Language is the ultimate binding agent. It is also interesting to note that one of the tell tale signs of the downfall of an empire is when the immigrant population refuses to abide by the language and mores of the country in which they migrated to, and instead expect their host country to conform to them.
Lets hope this country breaks its tendency to appease the politically correct, so that we don’t share the same fate as Rome.

It is wrong to NOT require "citizens" to at least have proficiency in the language. However, as some have already pointed out, we first need to establish, by law, one specific language, ie. english. Thus far, no leader has had the guts to stand up and do that much. So, the problems continue. The people living here illegally, no matter where they come from, should not be catered to at the expense of the citizens and the legal residents.

With the exception of the elderly, all natrualized citizens are required to have a working knowledge of English, as well as some demonstrated understanding of American history and civics.
What is wrong would be to REQUIRE them to only speak English. That would be a violation of the country's right to freedom of speech.
Many people jump into this discussion without realizing this.

So, what are we going to do, throw people in jail for speaking another language? It's just ridiculous. When you travel to Europe or even Mexico and the Caribbean, many things are published in several languages. Trying to equate love of America and being a good person with language spoken, and making it a law, is plain stupid. It doesn't accomplish anything and makes us look more and more intolerant.
Do I think that people who choose to live in the US should speak *some* English? Sure. Enough to read traffic signs and such if they drive. But do I think that people should be deported if they can't? No. They just shouldn't be able to drive a car.

no it is not wrong! I think citizens should speak the language of the country they are living in. that is a part of being a citizen. I also think having a second language is good. can you imagine the problems that can arise in an emergency when people cannot commnicate with eah other. If you want to live in this country speak the language

i think of that for the duration of inner maximum settings people could be allowed to speak any language that they choose, yet in public elementary English could be required. I stay in Arizona and many institutions are using English and Spanish. i grow to be at Walmart the different day once I heard Spanish classified ads on the loud speaker! i do no longer suggestions listening to or speaking Spanish for the main section, on the different hand, English may be the time-honored language interior the u . s . a .. particularly circumstances i think forced to speak Spanish and a few Spanish audio gadget that I fairly have come for the duration of get fairly offended in case you do no longer understand the language, that's certainly incorrect in my e book! i does no longer stay in yet another usa without attempting to appreciate the time-honored language spoken there. i think that that's in an immigrants suited interest to accomplish that for their secure practices and to assimilate into the society that they like to stay in.

That is not wrong at all.
In Belgium we have 3 official language (Dutch (60 %), French (35 %) and German (5 %)).
It gives a lot of trouble when some narrow minded French-speaking come to live in Flanders. Because French is an official language in Belgium, they find it normal that they don't have to learn Dutch (language of the Flemish people. So they expect that the old habitants are adapting to the new ones. To long to explain (you should need a website alone for this).
But one good advise, once you start giving rights to people to help them to integrate by helping them in their own language, you get the opposite. They don't integrate anymore (why should they).
If you have one language in your country stick to it by all means.

It isnt wrong at all. 90% of people living LEGALLY in the United States do speak English, as it is the language that has been spoken here for many years. It's the ILLEGALS and their supporters that want to change it.

I think it is fine to ask people who move here to become proficient in English. All of our forebearers did, because a common language is the beginning point of a common culture. We spend millions of dollars as a nation printing forms in every single language that anyone has ever asked for them.

Yep, you've solved it! It's not as though George W. Bush had a hand in anything, even though he squandered (and continues to squander) our nation's budget. The deficit was magically created by non-English speaking immigrants. Einstein has nothing on you!
