They are the great equalizer... gone are the gang colors... gone are the baggy, stupid looking clothes... gone are the shorts and tight jeans... gone are all of the things that teens get so wrapped up in... and it's all replaced with a uniform that totally frees people from trying to be one up on everyone or show their gang affiliation or whatever and in it's place is the ability to LEARN SOMETHING... which is what school is supposed to be all about.

Well I suppose the con part would be getting bored with wearing basically the same thing every day.
The pros are these....uniforms save time shopping for school clothing....they save time in the mornings, because my son doesn't stand there staring like a zombie into his closet for 20 minutes ...
he knows what he has to wear, so he just grabs it. Also it keeps the rich kids from picking on the others simply because they don't wear designer labels. Don't forget, they are easy for Mom to sell in a yard sale.

In the UK most schools have a uniform.

We always understood that pros are removing the competition between students for fashionable clothing (and the stress on their parents' wallets when their kid comes home insisting that he MUST have these new trainers etc!), also stopping kids from wearing very revealing, or outrageous outfits that are inappropriate and distracting.

It is also thought to give a "cohesiveness" to the school - everyone wearing the same makes everyone feel the same, removes the divisions between and richer and poorer students (as the richer kids can't parade all their expensive designer gear thus making the poorer kids feel inferior and creating tensions), and makes kids focus more on being in school, as the act of putting on a uniform makes it "school" time as opposed to relaxing or socialising time. It is also thought to look smarter and to identify the pupil with the school.

Obvious cons are lack of choice and self-expression for students in what they wear, expense of buying the uniform, sometimes uniforms not being practical (my school made all the girls wear knee length skirts and they were no fun in the middle of winter! Brrr! How we enived the boys their trousers), and the extra work for staff in "policing" what the students are wearing (giving detentions etc to those who deliberatetly flout uniform rules)

Pros mostly have to do with reducing the issues that come from competition between students over their clothing. Although the research has shown that schools that require uniforms tend to have higher acheivement.

Cons mostly have to do with taking away the choice of the students.

Cons: Some uniforms are very ugly, and you cant wear the latest fashions in your fav store.

They have lots of articles about this but...

School uniforms help kids save time on deciding what to wear (sound stupid, becuase I spend only about a minute deciding what I should wear, and that's becuase I fumble through my drawer.), and helps minimize any offense made by clothes (you know, clothes with insults written on them. Again, stupid.)

However, school uniforms hinder the originality of student's clothes, as with uniforms, they are unable to physically express themselves. Also, if both your uniforms get wet, dirty, or otherwise made so that you do not want to wear them the next day, you have to wash them personally, contrary to washing all clothes on laundry day.

Uniforms don't differentiate poor students from more affluent students.

Some say uniforms stifle creativity.
