tails help cats and dogs balance, other animals such as monkeys use a tail to hang from but still also used as a balance.
horses use it as a way to rid themselves of flies.
birds use it for flying.
fish use them to glide through the water with ease.
it does show emotion if a lot of animals as well but it is not the tail's primary function.
we have tails too, only ours is only like an inch long and its called a coccyx

Guess it depends on the animal. A cow uses its tail to keep flies away. A dog uses its tail to show emotions ( wags when it is happy), the monkey, for climbing, the peacock, to show off its beauty and attract the peahen (female).
A skunk on the other hand uses its tail to ward off threats....so there you see....tails have varying functions depending on the animal. I guess they kinda use their tails in the same way we use our hands to help with body language.

For dogs and cats, I would imagine that they have them for emotion - tail wagging, held between their legs; horses use them to be rid of irritating and painful flies; marine animals use them for the obvious reasons.

Depends on the animal.
1. Communication and display
2. Balance
3. Hanging
4. Aerodynamics in flight
5. Brushing away insects
Probably many others...

It would all depend on the type of animal kangaroos dogs and many others use it for balance. While elephants you it for a sense of togetherness in there herd. Birds use it in their direction for flight. Fish, alligators, and whales use theirs for swimming. some use theirs to attract mates also hope this helps

they use them for balance. Others for mating and anything they can use it for really. It is just their backbone extended. You have a tail but is so short that it is not noticeable.
