When where Guinea Pigs introduced to Europe?

I am creating a persona (character) for the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and I would like to know what period they fall under. I would like to use it possibly as a heraldic device or have it as my persona's pet. Please site your references, Thanks in advance!

aren't they native to peru? i know they are a delicacy in peru, and people there let them run around their houses until they are ready for a tasty snack.
