I am 38 weeks and 1 day pregnant. I have not lost my mucous plug and the baby has not even dropped, have not even dialated or effaced this is my first pregnancy. When does this usually start to happen? And what can I do to help the process along? The baby is estimated to already weight 8 lbs and 5ozs. Help Please???????

Hmmm, I have had 3 kids and I can only say that they will come when they are ready. My dr actually induced me two weeks early as I am fairly petit and the baby was 7 1/2 lbs.

How about asking your doc to strip your membranes? When he did it for me, I went into labour within 12 hours and had my baby 28 hours later. This doesn't work for everyone but it is worth a try at least.

Good luck and wishing you a safe and fast delivery!!!!!

Estimated weight is just a GUESS. It can easily be wrong by as much as a pound and often is. Don't let estimated weight scare you.

The normal length of a pregnancy is anywhere from 38 to 42 weeks. How certain are you of when you conceived?

Checking dilation and effacement really gives you no useful information. You can be closed up tight as a drum and have a baby a few hours later. Or you can walk around 3-4 cm dilated and 100% effaced for a week or more before active labor begins.

Why for women only? Silly girl I've had 3 kids. OK, what you need to know is that your baby is likely to be born any time before the 42 or 43 week. The first baby may not drop until just a short while before you go into labor, and labor to some extent can last for a while. Like several days of low grade labor, my wife had three days of contractions ~7 minutes apart before we had our second child. We had all three of our children at about 38 weeks. My cousins wife had her daughter at 42 weeks. She should have had a c-section...

My wife went into labor and lost her plug with the first child all the sudden when her water broke. The baby had dropped maybe a week before hand. The other two seemed to drop almost a month early.

GOOD LUCK!

Well, I don't want to give advice in lieu of a doctor, but I recommend walking A LOT. Sex also can help, too, especially if you can experience an orgasm. (Just don't do anything after you lose your plug or if your water breaks..) I know it is hard to wait, but some babies are stubborn. Sometimes a doctor may opt to strip your membranes for you to help you along.
I dropped at 7 months with my first and still carried her to full term, so don't rely on that as a proof that labor is not going to start. I am nearly 7 months right now, and the baby has shifted head down and feels lower..every pregnancy is different.

Sit back, relax and put your feet up. Enjoy being pregnant. It only lasts 9 months. You'll be taking care of the child for YEARS! Everyone progresses differently with labor. I lost my mucous plug 5 weeks before I went into labor. I have a friend who was dialated 2 cm for 3 weeks before she went into labor. But I know other people who didn't lose their mucous plug until the day before they went into labor. Try to do a lot of walking. Have a lot of sex. The hormones will help kick start the labor.

I never noticed my plug loss, but I did drop and start dialating the last two weeks of my pregnancy. If you are a small person, you may consider talking to your doctor about breaking your water to start inducing soon with a baby that size. I know they can come alot bigger too, but my doc was scheduled to induce me on July 19 (one week early) because my baby was measuring 8-8 1/2#. She came on her own on July 18 & was 7# 11oz. Do a lot of walking and squatting trying to get the baby moving down to see if that helps. Also semen is a known agent for starting the cervix dialating and efacing so you might make your partner happy with that suggestion! Good luck and hope it goes well!

My first advice is go for a walk. I know you're feeling really big now but that can help things along. Plus the fresh air will feel good too.

Second, have sex. I know (again) you don't really feel up to it but there's a hormone in semen that can help start labor. Plus it'll be at least 6 weeks before they'll let you have sex after the baby's born.

Third, the baby will come when he's ready. Relax. 8 lb 5 oz is not all that big. You'll do fine.

Don't worry about the size too much. Ultrasound estimates can be off by a couple of pounds. I was told my baby was around 11 lbs(ouch) and she only weighed 7 lbs 8 oz when she was born. My situation was like yours and she ended up being a week late. There really isn't much you can do but wait. The baby won't come till it's ready.

I know you are miserable right now but enjoy this time because it's the last bit of peace you will have for a while. I never lost my mucus plug ( i had 3 c-sections) but the first baby i had 15 hours of labor before the surgery and i never dialated past 3. so it just depends on the person. Ask any mother tho...enjoy the now. When the baby gets here it's a wonderful thing but life changes.

It's always hard to tell...not gonna happen until the baby is ready. You probably still have a week or two.

On a lighter note......with my 1st son. I went to the doc on Monday with no dilation. On Monday night I lost the mucus plug, water broke, and had dilated 3 cm when I got to the hospital. I only dilated 1 more cm before I had him by c-section the next afternoon.

Just goes to prove not everybody like clockwork dilates for a few days before the water breaks and the baby is ready. He told me that same day my water broke I probably still had 2 weeks....
