I want a PS3, but it's going to be WAY to expensive. If tthe 360 comes down in price when the PS3 comes out, I might get it.
I've also been considering the Nintendo Wii. I never considered getting the GameCube, but the Wii looks like it might be interesting to play (with the sensor remote) and actually looks like it'll have some good games. Plus, if I buy the Wii instead of PS3, I'll save about $300.
If all else fails, I'll just keep playing my PS2, until I can sell it to a museum.

Wii.
Xbox and the PS2 are generally for the older crowd. They depend on awesome visuals...more or less on the gameplay. I will say that both have some really awesome games. If the mature ratings are what people want: PS2/XBox 360.
Wii is more about the gameplay and less on the graphics. I grew up with nintendo so I am going to take sides, of course. With the new controller, it's definitely the next-gen console. Great gameplay and party games get the people together and let's people from young to old play it (and the easy controller settings help too).

It mainly depends on your age group, interests, peers, and budget.
For kids, people who like cartoons, old school gamers, people with a low budget, or people who like to move with their games, it would most likely be the Wii.
For more mature people, teens, techno geeks, lovers of graphic detail or action, the XBox 360 would be the best.
For those who have a better budget, interests of both the Wii and the 360, Sony fans, or Blue-ray fanatics, then the PS3 (w00t!) would be the a good console.
To answer your question, it depends on which group of people. I would say right now most people are excited over the Wii and the PS3, mainly becuase it hasn't come out yet, but a good few are interested in the 360.

Most people would want an Xbox 360 and/or Wii.
Xbox 360 because it is a lot of fun with great graphics, games, and multiplayer.
Wii because of the unique controllers, and the gameplay.
