i don't just mean speed i also want to hear what you think about styles. eg. jimi hendrix (not very technical but lots of style). i have always been a big slash fan. but satriani shreds and i just started listening to ywngie mamsteen (spelling?) and he is insane!

With all the varying styles and genres of music, it's impossible to name just one guitarist as the best. So I've named several guitarists who I feel could make a claim for that title.

Eric Johnson - One of the most (if not the most) accomplished guitarists, ever. His versatility, technique and overall knowledge of the instrument is second to none. A true "student" of the guitar.

Steve Hackett - He has a very unorthodox approach to the guitar. Be it blues, jazz, classical or rock - Hackett has mastered it all. One of the music world's most underrated guitarists.

Joe Satriani - From his technically proficient and cerebral compositions - to his more lyrical and soulful playing, "Satch" is one of the best. There are many more aspects to his playing than just shredding.

Alex Lifeson - Another guitarist who uses a very different approach. Although, his abilities are often overshadowed by his Rush bandmates - he is a very innovative and stylish player.

Trevor Rabin - A very proficient and melodic guitarist who is adept at any style of playing. He is always reaching to expand the tonal and textural boundries of the instrument.

Also:
Alan Holdsworth
Steve Vai
Michael Schenker
Steve Morse
Andres Segovia

Hendrix, no one has been more influential in music history.

My personal favorite though is John Frusciante. He's the guitar player for Red Hot Chili Peppers and his solo stuff is amazing. I like that he doesn't worry about speed and it's all about what sounds good and he creates amazing, flowing music. Supposedly anytime he jams, everyone in the room's jaws drop.

woooooooooww that's a pandora's box! some of my favourites:
al di meola, stevie ray vaughan (super technical), hendrix, steve vai, john petrucci, joe satriani - the last three are also technical but they're more scales/theory oriented whereas stevie just jams out the blues like a madman.
