Treat her with the same sensitivity you would show a person who lost a human family member. Tell her how sorry you are and be supportive. A monetary donation to an animal charity in your friend's pet's name is always a nice gesture.

thats so horrible! just give her lots of hugs and let her cry on your shoulder, cause she's going to cry. a lot. last week, i was supposed to get a puppy on thursday, and about 4 hours before i was going to leave, and drive about 4 hours to get this dog, i got a call from the owner saying that something got into his barn and attacked some animals, puppy included, and it had to be put to sleep. i was devistated. i cant immagine loosing a puppy after actually owning it. you should help her find out why this happened. the vet might have done something wrong. it might make her feel better to activly try to keep this from happening to other pets. give her a big hug for me

All you can do is tell your friend that you are sorry over the loss of her pet, and if there is anything at all you can do, please let you know. Other than being supportive, there's not much you can do.

You can get pet sympathy cards now. I would give her one of those and just be there for her.
