Sounds to me like someone's been racing their Avenger. Check the radiator coolant for oil in it... and then check the oil for a milky white color which indicates water in the oil. One or both of these are indicators of a blown head gasket. An Avenger, being a sportier car, is more likely to have been run hard...and this tends to lead to things like blown head gaskets and cracked or warped heads.
A blown head gasket isn't a mortal wound, but it's going to cost you a few bucks to have fixed. Good Luck.

Blown head gasket by the sounds of it. When you start the vehicle look for the smoke. Also, check the radiator coolant. If there is oil in it, you could have a blown head gasket.

You sound like you have a leak in the line somewhere and the smoke coming out of the exhaust is your oil burning. I would get it fixed or sell it.

What color smoke? White or oil smoke?
White, blown head gasket, cracked head. Did you overheat the engine recently?
Oil smoke, you've got some serious ring problems...

You have a blown head gasket which is serious and cost a lot to fix. Probalby at least 600 dollars.
