Why do women objectify themselves?

I do not for the life of me understand why women are so eager to objectify themselves. Everywhere you look women are prostituting themselves. And music videos, OMG, they're so much worse than they used to be. You would think with most victims of domestic violence being women, and women being targeted for violent crimes that at some point they'd be a little less concerned with shaking their T&A and more concerned with having some self-respect. Teaching our young girls to be self-confident, and not sharing themselves with a shipload of men. Men don't respect women unless they're forced to. And I think it's hard for them to do that once they've seen everything from the rooter to the tooter.
Examples of the craziness: Girls Gone Wild, The Game has something called Hip Hop something, and Jessica Simpson's new video "Public Affair" (ice cream cone scene-what was that all about?)...and there's tons more I'm sure.

I am not a feminist or anything, but I agree. Society has young girls all confused about the image they are to present. If you sleep around you're a wh*re but if you don't you're a prude. If you dress sexy you want male attention if you cover up or wear baggy clothes, you're a slob. It's ridiculous, why aren't men and women today teaching their sons to respect females and teaching their daughters to respect themselves?

I does seem like a collosal step backwards..

I was born in 69, raised by a single mom - and to be honest I thought (assumed actually) that mine would be the first generation to experience gender equality..

I can only deduce that men still hold the reigns (obviously) and the few women in charge have had to sell out to get where they are - sacrificed their integrity along the way.

It is true, however, that us men are ruled by our d¡cks... so I guess if you are a woman your sexuality can be your greatest weapon.. but obviously its use comes at a price...

great question! i completely agree with you. as interpreters are hot said, "sex sales", there's no doubt about it... unfortunately.

i can honestly say that at one point of my life, when i was younger... i went through a phase when i "objectified" myself. no, i wasn't a prostitute or whatever, but i'd portray myself as the fun, crazy "girls gone wild" girl. i'd get the attention, but WTF was i thinking?!?! haha. luckily, i never got treated like crap or disrespected thank god. now i realize how cheap, and ghetto that was... it's sad that many girls/women act that way today.

if you want the respect, you have to respect and love yourself.

RUel number one men and woman are diferent in every way (NOT EQUAL) no one is. Men do everything better thatn woman, not to be sexist but its true, but its true for a reason, genetics, biology woman are are not here to compete with us. Woman area breed apart they areprimarily here to have families and continue the cycle. Look at animal species. females take care aof the kids and home and men are hunters and providers. This is not new you cant fight biology. we are alll here on this earth for a reason as soon as you accept that reason than you understand why your here. Woman are very sexually oriented creatures for a reason their whole body is built to reproduce. To do this they have to get males attention and the cyle continues

I agree with you. It's hard for some to complain about lack of respect if what we see on the media are these sluts, especially in rap and hip hop videos. They do it for the sale, it's all about the money. Sex sales, that's it, as pathetic as it sounds.

i do respect women and ive been with many....the only time i dont respect a woman is when they dont respect me, ive never been forced to respect any woman but i do so out of my own will...actually most ofmy friends are women, like 90% of them, how could i have that many female friends if i didnt respect them.....i just see them as other people, i dont try to get into their pants like most guys would either, theres only one girl whose pants i try to get into and thats my fiance, were planning to get married in a year or two andlove each other very much, and we DO have respect for one another, both in the bedroom and out of it

one of the rules of our relationship in her words: if you dont treat me like a skank in the bedroom, i wont treat you like an *** out of it...

but back on subject, in pop culture, yeah, many women are selling themselves for the money and the fame...sure some like it, but many of them dont

i do agree, but it is like the previous poster said "sex sales." these women are cashing in on thier best assets. especially in the entertainment industry, sex sales. women like jessica simpson are competing with other sluts like britney and christina so they are trying to outdo each other with sexiness. women who come out looking squeaky clean find it is hard to compete even if they are very talented. i wish it would stop, but there is not much we can do. there will always be those women with low self-esteem who feel their only option is to sell themselves. but i do have to hand it to them, they make more money then i ever could with my degree.
