What is the purpose of these huge bumpers? They appear to be either stainless or aluminum tube, strongly welded. Are the fibreglas hoods that fragile/expensive? Also - I'm seeing a lot of 'supertires' (two LARGE tires instead of four per axle). Does this depend on which state allows them? And WHAT IS UP with those LOOOONG (2 or 3 or 4) trailers in Michigan?

Yes, the bumpers are primarily for animals like deer. The fiberlass front ends are expensive and break easily. A deer will pretty much just bounce off the bumper without much damage. Some drivers spend much of their time going through high animal traffic areas, like anywhere in Wisconsin. The bumpers also help keep cars from going under the truck. For some fun, in your search engine type in Australian road train and see what comes up. In Australia, they run as many as twenty trailers (maybe more) hooked onto one tractor. It is impressive to see. I want to try that at least once. Michigan is one of the few states that have several different laws concerning tractor trailers. I think I saw a large dump truck with 10 axles. That's just crazy.

Super singles cuts your tire maintenance/problems in half (2 tires vs. 4 tires) but they cost more than a single tire. It also costs more if you break down and call road service for a tire. If one goes flat, you're not going anywhere, whereas with 4 tires, you might can get to a safe place.

2/3 trailers are just trying to save money, carrying as much cargo as allowed by one driver.

I'll only answer one at a time. The large reinforced bumpers are there to protect the very expencive fiberglass hoods, radiator and other engine parts.Perhaps you have seen what happens to someones vehicle who was unluky enough to hit a deer?Much better to bounce it out of the way!
